There has already been concern express by the exam regulation body Umalusi about the drop in the number of learners taking Maths up to Matric level.

This is mainly a concern because more and more learners choose to change to Maths Literacy with the promise of higher marks, but as a result are not able to study many courses at higher education level that require pure maths as entrant requirements.

Now the Gauteng MEC in charge of Education, Panyaza Lesufi has expressed his concern that the number of pupils chosing to study accounting has been dropping over recent years. In the last ten years the number of school learners taking accounting as a subject has dropped by more than a half.

Lesufi took to Twitter to express his concern.

There was no official word from Department officials to back up Lesufi’s concern.  It seems unlikely that the subject will be removed and it seems that the provincial Minister was just expressing his concern online.
